Oklahoma’s First Costco Site in Tulsa

Oklahoma’s First Costco Site in Tulsa

Tulsa leaders have announced that Costco is coming to town, and it will be the first Costco in the state of Oklahoma. The store will be located at 103rd and Memorial and is set to open in tje summer of 2015. The new establishment will bring an estimated 200 jobs to Tulsa.

Costco is a membership-only warehouse club based in Seattle that offers members with a wide selection of merchandise. It offers everything from candy and snack foods to school supplies, automotive goods, gardening equipment, jewelry, and appliances. Costco has 461 warehouses in 43 states and is the second largest retailer and largest membership warehouse club in the United States. Costco is the seventh largest retailer in the world.

The company decided to publicize the news when President Barrack Obama praised them for paying $21 an hour and providing several benefits to their part-time employees. Costco will be adding to the economic growth of the city by creating more jobs, and cashiers will be paid above minimum wage at $11.50 an hour. This is great news for people in Tulsa who are currently looking for jobs.

Costco is also well-known as the largest purveyor of fine wines, but because of Oklahoma’s stringent liquor laws, the store will not be able to sell wine here. Management has decided to do the next best thing and build a separate structure that will contain a liquor store, called a pod, next to the Costco store. As required by law, the separate store will be managed by an independent third party. Costco is hopeful that, at some point, the rules will change and they can eventually sell liquor and wine because alcoholic beverages accounts for almost 10 percent of the company’s sales.

Some members of the Tulsa community have questioned the location of the new warehouse club because traffic is a continual problem on Memorial. But, District 8 City Councilor Phil Lakin said that they are pushing for the synchronization of the traffic light system in the area to address that issue.
