Stone and Brick Cleaning Guide for Home Owners

Stone and Brick Cleaning Guide for Home Owners

Many homeowners have incorporated stone and brick materials into the designs and structures of their homes. From interior to exterior structures, the use of stone and brick materials can definitely bring about a cozy and homey feel to your home. Moreover, the durability and versatility of these materials cannot be questioned. That is why many home owners still opt on utilizing these materials despite their more expensive prices compared to other home construction materials.

Now some may think that after the construction was finished and everything has been put up properly, there would be no need to clean and maintain stone and brick structures and we can just leave them as is since they are so durable. However, like most (if not all) things – especially those which involve a fairly large amount of investment – taking care of stone and brick structures at home is still very important to make them last. Cleaning will not only keep the structure looking brand new, it is also necessary to avoid premature damage.

Fortunately, home owners have options when it comes to stone and brick cleaning. This activity can be done by home owners themselves or by professional cleaners. A suitable cleaning option would also depend upon the kind of stone or brick material involved. So basically, one can start with the simple soap-and-water combo in removing dust and dirt that may have deposited in the stone and brick structures. While this method is practical and easy, this may also take a lot of effort on the home owner’s part especially if the stone or brick structure covers a big area. There are also times when simple manual washing may not work on some type of dirt or stains. A better washing method for these kinds of materials is the power washing method. However, this method is better done by professionals since using the wrong amount of pressure may damage the stone or brick masonry.

Another stone and brick cleaning method is grit or sand blasting, which is an industrial process where the stone and brick surfaces are treated with a pressured stream of grit or sand to make them smooth. Again, this method should be done by professionals to avoid scarring of bricks.
