Tulsa International Mayfest: Celebrating Art, Music, and Food Downtown
This weekend is the 42nd Annual Tulsa International Mayfest, celebrating art, music, and food in the heart of downtown Tulsa. The festival will offer something for everyone, including art, live music, and an array of food. The four-day festival is held every year to highlight the importance of the arts in the Tulsa community.
According to Mayfest’s executive director, Heather Pingry, the festival’s mission is to expose Tulsans to art, whether it be by collecting it or making their own. Mayfest is one of Tulsa’s most popular festivals and has remained free to the public, staying true to its mission of bringing access to the arts to everyone.
This year, the festival has partnered with WPX and the Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa to offer a gallery in the Downtown YMCA at 418 S. Main St. The Art of the Monarch Gallery will feature artwork from fifth and sixth grade students from Hawthorne Elementary in Tulsa, where art programs have been eliminated. The students enrolled in an after-school art program, coached by the council’s resident artist, Lauren Lunsford, where they were able to learn of the beauty and nature of the monarch butterfly.
Aside from art Mayfest will have other features as well. It is a haven for food lovers and will have vendors who offer everything from classic festival food to delicacies like barbecue parfait, which is a combination of mashed potatoes, pulled pork, baked beans, and barbecue sauce layered in a plastic cup and eaten with a spoon. There will also be live music by local and regional talent on the Community Stage. Over 50 acts will be performing.
