Cleaning After Your Home Renovation Project

Cleaning After Your Home Renovation Project

Making your house more beautiful and up-to-date is the exciting part of renovation projects. Walls are newly painted and floors are refreshed. There are new furniture, lighting fixtures, and hardware, and even with just one specific update, your house can feel transformed from what you used to see to something refreshing to your eyes.

But, while you may be clinking glasses to celebrate completion once the job is finished, who is doing the cleaning afterward? It is one thing to plan and implement your project from the early design to putting tools to use and adding finishing touches. Once you’re done with the fun part, though, there is still the tedious issue of cleaning up afterward.

How do you properly clean up after your home renovation project, so you can fully enjoy your new, updated home? Here are a few tips:

  • Remove big trash first. Before you start cleaning, try to remove as many trashes as you can. Prioritize the big ones like damaged wood, paint cans and old newspaper. Remove all these for easier navigation around the room. It can also enable you to see everything on the floor.
  • Separate hazardous and non-hazardous waste. There will likely be some hazardous chemicals involved during your renovation, such as thinners, paints, and adhesives. Separate these containers, even if they are already empty, so you can dispose of them properly without contaminating things.
  • Use your vacuum. You can sweep the floor, but the dust accumulated during your project has likely entered every nook and cranny imaginable. After sweeping the floor, vacuum the floors, your furniture, rugs, and wall corners. Also vacuum the insides of your cabinets, especially if they were opened frequently during your renovation.
  • Wipe your fixtures and hardware with a damp rag. This will remove dust and dirt from your doorknobs, window fixtures, and light fixtures. Wipe your switches as well. These things are often overlooked, but may be breeding bacteria due to the accumulated dirt.
  • Disinfect. Take the time to disinfect things that you always use. This will ensure that bacteria are killed before you continue with your daily routines. Spray a disinfectant all over the place.
  • Don’t forget the walls. Dry dust newly painted walls or vacuum walls with wallpaper. It may not be obviously visible, but your walls accumulate dirt as well and need to be cleaned to eliminate additional dust in the house.

Ask for assistance. If you are working on a big project, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Cleaning can be overwhelming and take days if you do it yourself. If you do not have the time and energy, hire a professional cleaning service to do the job for you. Sometimes it’s worth the additional expense at the end, just so it is finished and you can move on.
