Safety Tips for Homeowners This Halloween

Safety Tips for Homeowners This Halloween

Halloween is just a few weeks away, and many people are already planning for the festivities. Children and adults love to create spooky themes this time of year, and that includes decorating your house!

Although Halloween is fun, there are lots of props and people around, so you need to make sure you have proper safety measures in place, so no one gets hurt. Take steps to keep things accident-free, so everyone can have a fun night to remember.

Here are a few tips for how to celebrate Halloween safely:

  • Clean before you decorate. Clean up your front yard before setting up your Halloween decorations. Keep the area free from debris and dirt. Fill up holes if there are any. Cleaning up will also help you identify any repairs that may need to happen and will make set up and tear down of decorations easier.
  • Have proper lighting. Though a dark path can add to a spooky feel, it may not be safe for all the little ones. They can trip or bump into things if they cannot see where they are going. Add luminaries that can give you the spooky effect, but still provide enough light to brighten your pathways.
  • Keep your pets inside. Some people are afraid of dogs or cats, or pets in general if they are not familiar. Allowing your pets to wander around your yard during Halloween festivities can make others feel afraid or intimidated.
  • Avoid using candles. If you want the ambience of candlelight, opt for battery-operated, flameless candles. Or, position your candles away from flammable materials.
  • Check your front porch. Are your railings safe to use? Is your floor slippery? Check the safety of your front porch so no trick-or-treaters fall or get into an accident. Make sure it is clean and free from any obstacles.
  • Make sure your smoke alarm works well. With all the smoke and mirrors, you want to stay safe!

Check your home security system. If you have a home security system, you need to make sure it is working well. There are lots of mischievous acts on Halloween, so just make sure your house is guarded and protected.
