Money Saving Tips for Your Groceries

Money Saving Tips for Your Groceries

We all need sustenance to keep us going, which means that whether you like it or not, grocery shopping will always be a necessity. Grocery shopping can be a fun adventure if you’re exploring new foods and trying new recipes. The downside, however, is that the costs can add up quickly if you’re not paying attention. They key to successful grocery shopping is planning and budgeting.

So, how do you save money from your groceries and still enjoy delicious food? Here are a few tips:

  • Avoid shopping when you are hungry. It will cause you to impulse purchase because you are craving food. Whether that means buying too much food or buying foods that aren’t very healthy or are too expensive, it is a common occurrence. So, eat before you shop.
  • Shop alone. As much as possible, avoid bringing your kids. Although we love our little ones, they tend to start asking for lots of things and trying to persuade you to buy random items that are unnecessary and often unhealthy.
  • Plan your meals ahead. Try to plan your meals for at least two or three days, so you can use similar ingredients for multiple meals to avoid waste and cut down on costs.
  • Stick to your list. This is very important for saving money. If you stick to your list, not only do you save time, but you also save a lot of money by not succumbing to impulse purchases.
  • Reduce your number of shopping trips. Avoid shopping every day or every other day. Shop once or twice a week max because the more frequently you shop, the more likely you are to impulse shop and buy in excess.
  • Go bulk if you can. For instance, buy detergent in bulk instead of smaller, more expensive retail bottles. For things you use constantly, it makes sense to buy in bulk at a reduced rate. This makes sense for non-perishable food as well. Unless you use a lot of a particular food ingredient in your cooking, however, avoid buying perishable food in bulk unless you know you’ll use it….otherwise, it just goes to waste.
  • Use coupons. Don’t be intimidated by using coupons. They can save you a lot of money. Some stores even have phone apps that you can open while you’re in the store to help guide you to what’s on sale.
  • Look for sales. If you know a store is having an upcoming sale, then wait for it to arrive before you buy things. If you can’t wait that long, just buy the bare minimum of what you need beforehand, so you can still capitalize on the sale.
  • Check out brands. If you aren’t a brand loyalist, then opt for generic brands. Unless there are significant differences between brands for a particular product, this will save you a lot of money while still getting what you need.

Be mindful of your budget. Set a budget every time you do your groceries. If you tend to splurge, have a calculator ready to add everything up before you place it in your basket in order to hold yourself accountable. If you go beyond your budget, try to adjust before checking out.
