Garage Door Safety Tips

Garage Door Safety Tips

Having a garage at home can offer a number of conveniences, ranging from a place to park your car to a work area or storage. Your garage can also increase your home’s curb appeal. But, garages carry certain risks as well. They provide an additional point of access for burglars and can also be an accident hazard due to the heavy materials of the doors.

So, how do you keep your garage door safe? Here are a few tips:

  • Keep your garage door remote in a safe place. Keep it away from children, so they cannot play with it. Make sure you have a specific safe storage place for it, so it won’t get lost easily.
  • Always watch your fingers when opening your garage door. Also check your surroundings when closing and opening to see if there are potential risks of getting into an accident.
  • Check your garage door every month. This is to ensure that everything is still functional and no parts are damaged or loose. If you spot any damage, have the effected area repaired or replaced immediately. Hire a pro if you cannot do the inspection yourself.
  • Never leave your garage door remote inside the car. After you get out of the car, take it inside with you. This will prevent it from getting stolen if someone breaks into your car.
  • Always secure your garage door. Just like your front door, your garage door provides access to your main house. Make sure to always secure it after you have opened and closed it.
  • Set your garage door to vacation mode if you are going out of town. This will securely lock the door before you come back.
  • Never leave your garage door open at any time. Unless you are inside your garage and doing something that needs proper ventilation, or unless you are getting your car inside your garage, keep the door closed. Keeping it closed will help secure your home and prevent anything inside your garage from being identified and stolen.
  • Never let your children play near your garage door. In general, this will prevent accidents, especially since we never know when a garage door might become faulty.
