Tulsa Named as a Top 100 Resilient City in the Centennial Challenge

Resilience is a valuable trait in a person, and the same is true for cities. Being resilient means that a city has certain capacities and attributes that allow it to absorb and rebound quickly from shocks and downturns tied to the economy, social systems, and infrastructure.

The Rockefeller Foundation has launched the Centennial Challenge of 100 Resilient Cities initiative, and Tulsa is one of 67 cities that have already been named. One of the benefits of being named a Resilient City is that the city receives a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation to put toward creating initiatives that help the city become even more resilient.

Mary Kell has been named the first Chief Resilience Officer in the city of Tulsa. She is currently working solo on the plan, but is receiving assistance from a few interns from the Americorps program. The Rockefeller Foundation is funding her position.

Kell will be developing a resiliency strategy plan to address future shocks and stresses that may affect the city. According to Kell, stresses generally refer to unemployment and transportation, while shocks are related to weather events like tornados.
