How Long Should Your Home Appliances Last?
Investing in home appliances makes life easier. Heating leftover food takes seconds with a microwave. Food can last for days inside a refrigerator. Washing and drying clothes is a breeze with a washing machine and dryer.
But, with all the investment put into appliances, how long do they last? Here are some general estimates of how long standard appliances should last:
- Washing machine – 10 years
- Microwave oven – 9 years
- Refrigerator – 13 years
- Electric dryer – 13 years
- Gas range oven – 15 years
- Food waste disposal – 12 years
- Electric water heater – 11 years
- Gas boiler 21 years
If your appliances do not seem to be operating as well as they should, here are some tips for how to properly maintain your appliances so they last a long time:
- Clean your appliances regularly. Accumulation of dirt makes them work less efficiently and can even damage some of their parts. Clean them with a dry or moist cloth or with mild soap and water.
- Read usage instructions. Always follow instructions on how to properly use your appliances. Each brand and model has different features, so be sure you understand how they work.
- Avoid placing them in harsh environments. Never place your appliances in an environment that is harmful to their function. For example, don’t put your gas stove near your hot water heater.
- Do not use any metal utensils on your appliances. If you are not careful, metal objects will scratch or damage the surfaces of your appliances.
- Have your appliance checked regularly for any electrical problems. Small issues fixed right away can prolong the life of your appliances.
- If there are filters, change your filters as recommended. In your user manual, you can find information on how often you should change them.
- Do not overload circuits. To avoid electrical shortages in your appliances, do not plug them into overloaded electrical outlets.
