Preventing House Fires During Winter

When the cold days and nights of winter arrive, we all turn to our heating units and fireplaces to stay warm. The increased usage of heat and energy, however, also brings with it a higher risk of house fires. House fires in winter are common and cause millions of dollars in damage each year.

Fortunately, there are ways you can reduce that risk in your own home by following these tips for preventing house fires during winter:

  • Check to be sure your heaters are in good working condition. Make sure that your heaters are functioning properly and that they have proper air flow. A heater can overwork itself if it has a problem, and that can lead to overheating and fire hazard.
  • Only use burning units if the room is well ventilated. Not only will this keep the warm air evenly disbursed, but it will also prevent the buildup of gases and fumes in your homes.
  • Keep flammable items away from your fireplace. Make sure your curtains and firewood are a great distance from your fireplace. If you are using candles and kerosene lamps, place them far away from any flammable items as well. All it takes is one spark to ignite something.
  • Avoid overloading your electrical circuit. Use a power strip to more evenly utilize electricity or plug items in throughout the house instead, so not all the energy usage is concentrated in just one outlet. If you simply must place an item in a certain place, use an extension cord to plug it into an outlet somewhere else.
  • Always have a fire extinguisher on hand. In the event of fire, a fire extinguisher is invaluable to putting out the fire before it gets out of hand. Also have easy access to heavy blankets, which are handy for putting out small fires as well.
  • Dispose of dried leaves and garbage properly. They are extremely flammable and spread fire quickly.
  • Unplug lights and cords that are not in use before you go to sleep. Check your home for potential fire risks and take proper safety precautions when necessary.
  • Have your chimney checked by a professional. Have it cleaned once a year to reduce fuel substances and residue from building up and causing a fire or ventilation hazard.
  • Put up a fire screen in front of your fireplace to prevent sparks from reaching your carpet and wood floors.
  • Always have a fire escape plan and make sure everyone in your family knows it.
