Refinishing Hardwood Floors the Easy Way

Refinishing Hardwood Floors the Easy Way

Hardwood floors are a stunning feature in any home and are well-worth the monetary investment.  Hardwood floors are sturdy enough to endure years of foot traffic and dirt, but over time they may begin to look less attractive if not given proper care and attention from time to time. You can enliven your floors by waxing, but that is just a temporary solution. If you really want to get back your original shine, you should refinish your hardwood floors.

Refinishing can be a challenging job and requires a lot of patience.  There are many flooring professionals that can do the job for you.  However, if you believe you enough skill to tackle the project yourself, here are a few things you need to do to obtain a quality result:

1. Completely empty the room first by removing all the furniture and window treatments. This well help you protect the furniture from any sort of damage and will ensure that you have a finished product that is evenly sanded and stained.

2. Clean the floor thoroughly with vacuum cleaner before you begin sanding and make sure all small objects such as food are off the floor.

3. Have a heavy duty sander that you can gently move back and forth over the wood floors. Begin sanding in the corner farthest from the entry to the room and work toward the entrance. Move in a straight line with the pattern of the hardwood boards rather than going against it. Remember not to apply more pressure in one place that in another, as you could make gouges out of the floor or end up with an uneven surface.

4. Once you are finished with the sanding process, you can start staining. Find a shade of stain that you like and then apply it with the grain in five foot wide sections . Use a cloth mop or rag to apply the new stain and rub it on in a circular motion. Let it dry for about a day.

5. After the stain dries, apply a polyurethane floor sealer. It can be applied by using a large foam paint brush. Allow the first coat to dry about 12 hours before you apply the second. Wait for 24 hours for the second coat to dry.

Refinishing hardwood floors can be time-consuming and challenging, but by following simple processes, you can wind up with a beautiful finished project.
