You May Be Ruining Your Wood Floors

You May Be Ruining Your Wood Floors

Wood floors bring beauty and class to any kind of home. They create character and add a certain homey touch that makes a space feel inviting and warm. Despite most people’s love of wood floors, however, they oftentimes do things that can ruin them over time. Are you harming your wood floors?

Below are a few examples of things that can be damaging to wood floors, so you can make an effort to  avoid them and keep your wood floors looking beautiful for years to come.

  • Not vacuuming or sweeping well. If you don’t sweep or vacuum your floors regularly, dust and dirt will accumulate. This causes damage to your wood floors over time because the dirt becomes packed into the grain of the wood, which weakens it.
  • Allowing water or moisture to seep into your floors. Dampness is harmful to wood floors, so when you mop, do not use excessive amounts of water.  Be sure you wring your mop out before you apply it to the floors. Likewise, although spills are inevitable sometimes,  when they happen, wipe them up quickly, so the moisture does not seep into the wood.
  • Not vacuuming properly. One of the biggest things to avoid with wood floors are things and activities that can scratch then. When you vacuum, make sure that you’re using the right attachments, so you don’t scratch the surface of the wood.
  • Walking on your wood floors in high heels. Walking on wood floors with your street shoes can already add additional wear and tear to your floors, but high heels are a particular no-no. High heels are basically the equivalent of walking around your floors with nails. It’s best to remove your shoes whenever you are in the house to avoid damage.
  • Not using a rug or a mat. Rugs and mats protect your wood floors against scratches and dents. Use rugs under your furniture, especially in your living room and dining room areas that receive more use. Rugs also prevent dirt from collecting in the wood.
  • Not using the right kind of floor cleaner. There are different types of floor cleaners for different types of flooring materials. Make sure you use cleaners that are specifically designed for wood floors, so they do not cause harm to them.
  • Not maintaining your wood floors. In addition to keeping your floors clean, it is a good idea to do additional maintenance every now and then. From time to time, polish your floors for added protections and shine.
