Easy Plumbing Changes to Help You Save Water at Home

Easy Plumbing Changes to Help You Save Water at Home

Water is one of the most important commodities in our lives. Without water, there would practically be nothing living on earth. We all rely on water for our basic functioning, ranging from hydrating our bodies to carrying out basic tasks like bathing, cleaning, and cooking.

Unfortunately, there is a huge scarcity of water on earth, and in some areas, people must walk miles to obtain clean water. Fortunately, we have water systems that bring water to us, but even still, there are things each of us can do to help conserve water in our own little ways.

For starters, there are some simple changes you can make to your plumbing and appliance systems to help save water usage at home. You don’t need to make massive changes to your lifestyle in order to make a difference. Below are some simple adjustments you can make to help conserve water:

  • Change your showerheads. Taking a shower uses a lot of water, but that doesn’t mean any of us will stop bathing. It is a part of life, but there are ways we can make it more eco-friendly. You can change your showerheads to low-flow, more efficient options that will limit the amount of excess water that is wasted by using less water in a more efficient way.
  • Change your toilets. Old toilets are less efficient than newer ones and waste water with every flush you make.  These days, there are dual-flush toilets that can help save water by offering both lower water and higher water flush options, depending on your needs.
  • Install new water taps. You don’t want your tap to drip when it’s not in use. It may not seem like much when it’s only a few drops at a time, but those drops add up quickly and result in a lot of wasted water.
  • Check your pipes. Do you know if your water pipes are leaking? If you haven’t checked them in a while, it’s time to take a look. You may have spots in your pipes that are leaking constantly, which leads to both moisture damage and wasted water. If you detect any leaks, call a plumber immediately to come fix the issues.
  • Practice water harvesting. If you want to step your water conservation up a notch, begin collecting rain water by installing a water collection barrel.  While it may not be something you use for drinking, it can be great for watering your plants and handling non-consumption related water activities. This can also provide a significant savings on your water bills.
