Why You Need a Basement Sump Pump

Why You Need a Basement Sump Pump

If you own a home that has a basement located close to a natural water table, then there is a possibility that your basement will accumulate water from below or even through the walls. If you want to keep your home safe from water damage and mold, you should install a sump pump. If you already have one, it is important to be sure you know how it works and what it does.

A basement sump pump is generally a deep and wide hole that is dug in a corner of your basement. Once the hole has been dug, the sump pump, which  is housed in its own casing or drum, is then fitted into the hole. Concrete and cement are used to seal the hold and sump basin, so that all that remains visible is the top lid of the system with pipes that will suck out water at regular intervals. There are pumps that are submersible, and there are others that are mounted on a pedestal. Submersible ones are usually quieter since they are installed inside the sump basin itself.

If you have an older home, your sump pump may be connected to a sanitary sewer. Check to see if that is the case because that is not how sump pumps are installed today, and it may not be up to plumbing code. If your sump pump is connected to the sewer, contact a plumber to determine how to modernize its operation.

Most sump pumps are hardwired into the house’s electrical system. The electrical system should be located as high as possible above the pump, so it remains out of reach of small children and flood water. A battery backup sump pump can also be installed in the event that the electricity goes out in your home.

Sump pumps are the only true protection against a wet basement. Contact a qualified contractor to find out what type of pump you need, so you don’t have to constantly worry excessive moisture in your basement and the risk of ruining your belongings.
