How to Deal With Winter Pests
While different types of problems may arise during winter (one you might not think of is the possibility of mold growth due to the high humidity and coolness), none as quite so unsettling as seeing unwanted visitors creeping around the house. Bugs, spiders and other kinds of small creatures may try to find a home inside your house to avoid the cold outside.
Here below are some ways on how you can deal with winter pests:
- Avoid any standing water in and around the house. This is a good breeding ground, as well as a possible playground, for some creatures. After using water, do not leave them in a bucket or basin. Roaches in particular relish even small water droplets.
- Do not leave stored wood and materials inside your house. If you have building or fire materials still stacked in your home, best to store them in your storehouse or outside under a covering as these can be an attractive meal for some creatures.
- Seal any gaps and cracks. Aside from preventing drafts, this can also help you to avoid pests from coming in. Caulk your windows and seal door openings.
- Never bring the pests in. Sometimes, we may leave it unnoticed that pests come inside our home through our luggage and bags or winter decorations that have been stored in the basement/attic. Make sure to check your luggage, bags and other outdoor or holiday decorations. Some pests may already be in these places.
- Eliminate pests when you see them. I know, this isn’t a popular thought – but do not pass on eliminating them. Otherwise, very quickly you will have an infestation in your home.
- Install screens in your vents. Foundation and attic vents can be a sneaky way for some of these creatures to go inside your house. Make sure these are blocked.
Always close your trashcans. Critters will try to look for food in these places. Keeping lids closed will give a reason to move somewhere else.
