Tips on How to Make Your Home Flu-Free

With everything “cold” during the winter, no doubt the common-cold is one of the sickness people are concerned about. Constant sneezing, blowing your nose, and just a general sense of not feeling great can make a person grumpy – both at home and at work. In order to fight flu, you need to avoid the cold, take vitamins and make your environment germ-free.

Keeping your home flu-free can significantly help prevent diseases in your family. To keep your home free from flu-causing elements, here are a few tips you can use:

  • Disinfect your things. One of the main causes of flu and cold is virus spread. Things that you normally hold can be a good breeding ground for viruses. For instance, your remote control and your doorknob may spread the germs as all of your family constantly touch these things without disinfecting.
  • Keep outside things out. This applies to shoes, coats and other outdoor winter gears. Your home may be free of virus but it can be vulnerable to outside germs coming in. You can place these things in your mudroom if you do not want them lying outside.
  • Clean the air. Use a humidifier to clean your indoor air from viruses and germs. Airborne viruses can spread easily with recycled air. Make sure you keep the air you breathe clean so they stay out of your body.
  • Implement proper washing of hands. This is one of the most effective ways to prevent sickness. Proper washing of hands will keep viruses off your body and will prevent them from getting through your mouth, nose and eyes.
  • Wash your linens regularly. Do not let your linens stay for several weeks before removing and washing. Make sure you change your linens frequently (every few days even) if someone in your home is sick.

Throw away cleaning tools… that are already worn out, dirty, stained and used for a long time. For example, your sponges must be thrown out if they have been used for weeks. The same applied to your brushes. These items hold bacteria and are a breeding ground for viruses as well.
