Tips on How to Turn Your New House into a Home
Moving into a new house can be exciting! But, it always takes a while for everyone in the family to get used to the new space. There are new closets, new rooms, new nooks and crannies to decorate and complete. But, with every adjustment comes an adventure, and if you approach it that way, it can become a fun, memorable experience.
To speed up everyone’s adjustment, focus on turning your new house into a home. Setting up a homey ambiance will make everyone feel welcome and comfortable. When you and your family feel a sense of familiarity, it makes it easier to settle in and get comfortable.
Here are a few tips for how to turn your new house into a home:
- Display your family memories. Start by decorating with family pictures. Put them in pretty frames and display them on mantles and bookshelves. You can also display personal artwork and other memorable items like souvenirs from your travels.
- Install new locks. Replace the locks on all exterior doors with new ones, so you will instantly feel safe and secure. Give all family members copies of the new keys.
- Arrange your clothes inside your closets. Do not leave your clothes inside your bags and luggage. This will make it hard for you to get away from the “moving” feeling on a daily basis. Unpack all your clothes, so there is at least one moment of familiarity in your day while you’re getting dressed until you finish unpacking everything else.
- Finalize furniture arrangement. It makes it easier for everyone to settle in, when they can access a comfortable sofa, dining tables and chairs, and other furniture that is important to daily living. Prioritize your bed, chairs, and a small coffee table in the living room.
- Limit your “unpacking” to a few days. Do not prolong the days you need to unpack. The more quickly you unpack, the more efficient you will be, and you won’t find yourself stuck in a never-ending cycle.
- Customize your bedrooms. Make each room feel like your special own place. Focus on your children’s rooms first, so they can settle in quickly and make your life easier as you’re finishing the rest of the house.
- Install proper lighting. Make sure your new place is bright enough for you to work within. Install better lighting if previous lights are no longer functional or too dim for your needs.
Add more storage. Your “unpacking” will be a lot easier and faster if you have sufficient storage space. Consider your storage options before you move, so you can be strategic once you start unpacking.
