How to Sell Your Home in the Winter

Who wants to buy a house in the winter? Surprisingly, there is a common misconception that no on wants to buy a house when the weather is cold and gloomy. That is not true, however, and there are many potential buyers out there waiting to buy your home if you market it the right way. If you need to sell your home quickly, there are many tips you can implement to help both you and the buyer get what you want.

So, how do you effectively sell your home in the winter?

  • Let the light in – Despite the gloomy weather outside, make your buyers feel warm and cheery when they walk into your bright and welcoming home. Bright homes contrasted to the gloom outdoors will make your buyers feel at home and more compelled to buy the house.
  • Clean your pathway – Make it easy for your buyers to walk towards your home by shoveling snow and making the pathway clean and clear from foliage and debris. This also shows that the pathway is easy to maintain, which is a huge selling point.
  • Decorate – If it is the holiday season, you have an even greater excuse to make your house more beautiful and vibrant. However, decorate strategically. Do not overdo your holiday decorations to the point that they hide the features of your house. Keep it understated, yet elegant, and avoid overly religious items that could potentially exclude certain potential buying demographics.
  • Set the right atmosphere – Aside from making your home bright, make it warm as well. When your house is going to be shown, turn up the thermostat to make it feel comfortable and snug inside. Buyers will be coming in from the cold, so a higher heat level will warm them quicker, even if it’s higher than you would normally have it set. It will also give buyers a glimpse of what it would feel like if they lived there and demonstrates that the heater functions properly.
  • Clean your exterior – Even if you are flaunting your indoors, do not neglect the exterior. Keep your yard and clear of debris that may fall during snow storms. Clear snow from pathways in both the front and back yards. Clear snow off the roof, so buyers can see its condition.
  • Treat your buyers as guests – Add floor mats for their snow boots and have the scent of freshly baked cooked wafting through the air. Make them feel at home by allowing them to actually feel like they are living in the house.

Ask for feedback – Ask agents to provide feedback from their clients, so you can keep track of common comments and make adjustments accordingly if necessary.
