Home Lighting Mistakes to Avoid

One of the things that make a house look beautiful is lighting. With good lighting, areas of the house can be properly accentuated and displayed. Good lighting is also soothing to the eyes and creates an ambiance that makes you appreciate your house even more.

Unfortunately, however, not every house is blessed with perfect lighting. Some homes don’t even function the way they should due to poor lighting. Though some of these things are beyond your control, there are still a few mistakes people make over and over again.

To help you avoid these common lighting errors, here are a few things to avoid:

  • Not having a bright kitchen. Living rooms should be nice and cozy, but when it comes to kitchens, even though it’s a place you spend a lot of your time, light and bright is key. Not having enough bright lighting in your kitchen can affect your food preparation. In spaces where you work, it’s best to install brighter lights.
  • Dark bathroom. Who wants to wash their face, shave, or apply makeup in the dark? These types of activities need proper lighting in order to avoid accidents – or mistakes when preparing your physical appearance!
  • Not using the right size. Lighting comes in all shapes and styles, and it’s important to use the right combination for a room. Think of how it will look if your fixture is too small or too big. It’s amazing how the size of a light fixture can alter the feeling of a room. Be strategic. Yes, you love the huge, glorious chandelier, but is it really going to be proportionate in your breakfast nook?
  • The bedroom is too bright. Do you really need to have a bright bedroom? Rooms that are meant for resting and lounging do not need brighter lights. In fact, these areas need dim, soft lighting to help promote relaxation and soothe the eyes.

Having one source of light. A major mistake many home owners make is putting only one source of light in a room. Yes, a huge chandelier may have the capacity to give off the necessary lighting in the living room. But, it will likely not provide even lighting throughout. By adding different sources of light around the room, things will feel more relaxed, calming, and put-together.
