Throwing a Green Outdoor Party at Home

Throwing a Green Outdoor Party at Home

Get-togethers and parties are a fun and exciting way to bond with your family and friends and connect with other people. Parties are fun, but they also produce a lot of garbage and waste. If you love to entertain, but are environmentally-conscious, there are many ways you can reduce waste. Going green at your parties not only does good, but it also creates some fun new ways to approach entertaining for both you and your guests!

To help you throw a green outdoor party at home, here are a few tips:

  • Choose local and organic produce. Food is an essential part of a party, and part of staying green is to make sure your food ingredients are organic and/or from local food sources. Refrain from using processed foods and opt for fresh.
  • Use reusable utensils. Though disposable serving ware makes cleanup easier, it is terrible for the environment, especially if you are using styrofoam. Using reusable utensils cuts down on landfill waste.
  • Make your own drinks. Concoct your own homemade iced tea or drinks using fresh ingredients. It’s healthier for your guests, you’ll save money, and you’ll use less packaging that would otherwise become waste.
  • Don’t overdo decorations. Avoid buying an excessive amount of decorations, especially if it’s a theme you’ll never repeat and simply throw away. If you need to decorate, use sustainable materials like wood and recycled paper products. Using natural elements like flowers and plants also adds a special touch.
  • Compost your scraps. Rather than throwing them in the garbage, create a compost pit in your backyard. You can then recycle scraps into fertilizer for your plants. This is something that can become a daily part of your lifestyle and reduce food waste in landfills significantly over time.
  • Use green and natural cleaning products. Cleaning will be done before and after your party, so make sure your cleaning products are made with natural ingredients. Avoid using bleach or harmful chemicals.
  • Go paperless. You do not need to invite your guests using a paper invitation. These days, invitations can be done via social media. So, go paperless and save your guests from piling up paper waste in their houses.
  • Send your guests home with leftovers. Are you willing to eat the same food for a week because of all the leftovers? Share some with your guests to ensure all of it is eaten and doesn’t go to waste.
