Proven Ways to Get Rid of Mosquitoes at Home
Mosquitoes go hand in hand with summer, and although they are a fact of life, that doesn’t make them any less irritating. Their bites itch, they give you red bumps, and in certain parts of the world, they even carry viruses like malaria, dengue, and zika.
That’s why it’s important to find an effective way to deter and kill mosquitos around your home. Here are a few tips:
- Add plants to your home – There are certain plants that breed mosquitoes, but there are also plants that repel them. Citronella, mint, and lemon trees are great deterrents to mosquitos. Position them throughout and around your home….not only are they effective, but they can also be incorporated into your decor.
- Light up some citronella candles – Choose scented candles that have citronella in them. You may also make your own scented candles with real citronella plants.
- Use garlic – Many people may hate the smell of garlic, but the truth is, mosquitoes do too. So, if you can stand the smell of garlic, chop up a few cloves at home every couple of days or use a garlic spray solution.
- Sprinkle a few coffee grounds around the house – If you are a coffee consumer, don’t throw those grounds away! Reuse them as a mosquito-repellant inside your home. Sprinkle a few grounds in different corners of the house. Mosquitoes, even their eggs, are deterred by the smell of coffee. Sprinkle coffee grounds around stagnant water also if you have a pond or frequent puddles nearby.
- Use a mosquito swatter – Despite your best efforts, some mosquitos may still get through your barricades, so have a mosquito swatter on hand for if you see them.
- Install screens around openings of your home. Add screens on your doors and windows. This will allow you to enjoy fresh air without letting in bugs.
- Install yellow LED lights – Mosquitoes are often attracted to light, but one exception is yellow LED lights.
