How to Soundproof Your Home
Parties, loud music, sirens, and cars zooming by – these are just some of the noises you can hear from inside your home. You want your home to be your safe haven, but sometimes noise pollution disrupts the peace. How do you deal with these problems? One way is to soundproof your home, so outside noises are reduced or concealed.
To help you soundproof your home, here are a few tips:
- Seal your windows. Noises can pass through even the smallest leak in a window. Though you may shut your windows and doors, small cracks are openings where sound can sneak through. Seal your windows to close leaks. If you are in a position to do so, you can replace your windows entirely with storms windows or those with double glass panes.
- Insulate your walls. If your walls are thin and hollow with very little mass separating the inside from the outside, sound will pass through. Cover either the interior or exterior with a layer of materials that is more sound resistant. Another option is to insulate between the walls.
- Check your ceiling. Leaks can also be found in your ceiling, which again allows the noise to pass through. Check for gaps and holes in your ceiling and apply caulking to cover up the holes. While you are at it, you may want to add an extra layer of insulation in your roof to block more noise.
- Spread carpet or rugs. This will help reduce noise and vibrations that come through your flooring materials. Carpet and area rugs are particularly functional in second-story floors.
- Install a solid door. The solid material door can help keep noise out. A solid mass material has a compact composition that will make it hard for noises and lights to pass through. The more glass you have in your doors, for example, the less sound resistant they will be.
- Add shelves on your wall. The added mass on your wall serves as a sound barrier. If packed with books or other sturdy objects, they become even more effective.
Install proper window treatments. Light curtains may be ideal for the summer, but thick ones are more effective if you prioritize soundproofing more.
