Plans to Revitalize Tulsa Route 66 Underway
Historic Route 66 dates back to the mid-20th century, when the Mother Road thrived and connected different states throughout the US. Thousands of miles connected Chicago to Los Angeles, and the longest stretch of the highway with the most miles passed through Oklahoma.
With its memorable history not just in Oklahoma, but throughout the country, leaders of the City of Tulsa are planning a revitalization of Route 66 as a part of the city’s future projects. City leaders took a tour around the Mother Road this week to observe the current state of the road and what needs to be improved and preserved.
City officials are hoping to boost tourism surrounding Route 66 and bring more business to the local economy. A new Route 66 Commission has been created to facilitate the planning of the revitalization project and to provide a platform to brainstorm ideas for how to boost the popularity of the route in Oklahoma. Tulsa residents are welcome to join or participate in the commission planning.
Funds for the Route 66 revitalization project will be taken from the Tulsa Vision Plan. Around $3.3 million will be allocated to the project.
