Tips to Survive a Kitchen Remodel

If you’ve made the decision to take the plunge and move forward with a kitchen remodel, you’re probably looking forward to a brand-new kitchen. You can’t wait to see the walls painted with new colors, cabinets refreshed, and a new island in the middle.

But, what happens during the process of a kitchen remodel? Where will you prepare your food? Where will you do normal daily activities that center around the kitchen?

Here are a few useful tips for surviving a kitchen remodel:

  • Create a temporary kitchen. It may not be as fancy and complete as what you’re used to, but the key is to create something functional. You can set up your temporary kitchen in another room, where your refrigerator and gas stove will fit. Add a table or a temporary counter for food preparation.
  • Store away kitchen items that are not essential. If you have extra plates and utensils or small appliances that you can survive without for a few days, store them away temporarily. This will reduce clutter and make things more efficient. Plus this will reduce the risk of your items getting damaged during the remodel process.
  • Make a cooking and dining plan. Formulate a strategy for preparing food with ease and reducing washing time and effort. Make use of disposables dishware and drink ware for the time being, so you don’t have to run the dishwasher or spend a lot of time (and space) cleaning dishes by hand.
  • Plan meals ahead. Plan easy meals and put them on a schedule. That way, you will know what to look forward to when cooking and how to budget your groceries. This also prevents you from having to sacrifice your family’s health for the temporary hassle of a remodel.
  • Always anticipate noise and dust. Never bring your kids and pets inside your renovation room. It will be unsafe for them, as it will likely be full of asthma triggers and materials that could injure them. As much as possible, keep them away. In addition, because of the dust, set your temporary kitchen away from the renovation room, so your food doesn’t become dusty the minute you make it.
  • Use small appliances. Make use of your microwave and a small table-top grill to  cook your meals while your stove and oven are out of commission.
