Going Green in Your Spring Garden
Spring is officially here, and that means loads of flowers in bloom and greenery popping up everywhere. Whether you’re a first-time gardener, or you’re a pro at bringing your garden to life every year, it’s exciting to start on your gardening and watch as plants thrive before your very eyes.
But, although you see a lot of green around you, the question is, “Are you going green in your gardening?”
Below are some tips for how you can go green in your spring garden to make sure you are using practices that are environmentally friendly:
- Use natural pesticides. Go for natural products that are effective, but at the same time, do not harm other insects and plants. You may be killing the bad pests, but at the same time, there are other innocent insects that are also affected by harmful pesticides. Choose organic pesticides that only target the pests you have intended.
- Conserve water. Water your plants consciously and not wastefully without regard to where the water hits. Spot water the soil and hit dry roots directly. Use a hose and drop irrigation to help you effectively water your plants.
- Use rainwater. This is more practical than using your tap water. Rainwater is free and eco-friendly, as you are recycling water and not allowing it to just flow away down your drains.
- Turn your food waste into compost. Organic, decomposable items like fruits and vegetables are nutrient rich and great food for your plants. Instead of allowing your fruit peelings and leftovers to go to into the trash, have a compost bin to compost them and use as fertilizer.
- Convert dried leaves and organic trash into mulch. Do you see dried leaves or twigs falling to the ground? Rather than scooping them up and throwing them into the trashcan, convert them into mulch for your plants. Your soil will become healthier.
- Recycle containers as flowerpots. Why buy when you can recycle? If you have useless containers lying around, redecorate them and use them as pots for your herbs or flowers. That way, you can practice recycling while also bringing more color to your garden.
- Plant more vegetables and herbs. Grow your own food and save yourself a trip to the grocery store. It is eco-friendly because you will be saving energy and travel resources.
