City of Tulsa Partners with Tulsa Community College for Spanish-Speaking Firefighter Training
During hours of crisis and emergency, clear communication is important for emergency crews and officers to offer necessary help. When officials are unable to understand what the people in need are trying to say, they may not be able to provide maximum aid and protection.
Tulsa has more than 80,000 residents who are Spanish-speaking, and a large portion of them are not fluent in English. In order to communicate with them during emergencies, the Tulsa Fire Department plans to increase their number of Spanish-speaking firefighters.
Currently, the Tulsa Fire Department has only 10 firefighters who are Spanish-speaking. The department is looking for 11 more. Those who are interested can apply for scholarships to go through firefighter training. The City of Tulsa is working with Tulsa Community College to grant the scholarships to qualified candidates.
