Tulsa Welcomes New Firefighters
It’s a dream job for many people to grow up and become a firefighter. Not only does it help people in peril, but it is also a challenging and honorable job. Firefighters risk their lives to keep members of their communities out of harm’s way, and it takes a special type of person to take on that task.
Tulsa is proud to welcome 35 new firefighters, who will be joining stations all around the city. The 35 new cadets will be a significant addition to the department, which currently has a high demand for more firefighters. Currently, an average of two firefighters retire every month.
The new firefighters will help in the rotation of duties in their specific assignments. Though Tulsa welcomes the relief of the 35 new firefighters, the City is still looking for about 20 more to meet their needs. Without the addition of new cadets, there will be a supply and demand gap for emergency calls.
Right now, the Tulsa Fire Department is deploying 3 firefighters in each fire truck for emergencies and rotating its existing cadets in overtime duties. The department is hoping to address job duties and the need for more firefighters and a safety tax proposal in April.
