Things You Need to Throw Away at Home Right Now

The new year means a chance for a new life – a better life. And, there’s no better place to start than at home!

Creating a more relaxing and organized home will inspire you to think clearly and accomplish more things. One way to achieve that is to de-clutter and throw away what is no longer useful or necessary in your life. When you free yourself of the things that no longer benefit you, it helps you to clear your mind of unnecessary stress and worry.

Not sure where to start? Here is a list of the things that you can dispose of right now:

  • Old magazines and newspapers. If you have magazines overflowing on your coffee table, in your bathroom, or in drawers, it’s time to  take them to the trash. If you are holding on to a good article, a memorable photo, or a must-try recipe, take a photo of it instead, so you can keep the information, but remove the clutter.
  • Grooming supplies. Do you have an excessive collection of products on your bathroom counter and in your cabinets? Check out their expiration dates and throw away anything that is old or that you never use. They take up space and create a feeling of chaos.
  • Used and unused hardware parts. Do random bolts and nails or hardware supplies roll around when you open your cabinets and drawers? If you find them and there is no use for them, throw them out.  Otherwise, collect them and put them all in a plastic containers, so you know where to look if you need a spare part.
  • Expired medicine and canned food. Time to clear out the pantry and medicine cabinets. Anything that is expired needs to go away….there is absolutely no reason to keep it, and it can even be harmful to you.
  • Old bills and receipts. Unless you are waiting for a possible warranty in the future or have collected expenses to deduct from your taxes, all old bills and receipts need to go.
  • Shopping bags and boxes. You can always find these under your kitchen sink or in your garage. Save a few to have on hand in case you need to reuse them for trash, etc.,  but throw the rest out.
  • Old paint and tools. Go through your garage, basement, and supply closets and see if there are any cans of paint that have already hardened on their containers. Dispose of them immediately and properly. Throw out tools that are broken and useless.
  • Unfinished project materials. If you love crafts or DIY projects, but have a lot of unfinished endeavors, it’s time to sort through them. Are you realistically going to finish them in the near future?  If not, throw them out or give them to someone who will finish them.
  • Unnecessary memories. It can be easy to be overly sentimental and hold onto unnecessary momentos that we don’t need. Does a bag clip remind you of when you went to the state fair? Does a broken picture frame remind you of the small shop where you bought it on vacation? If things are unusable and/or just taking up space, it’s time to let them go. You will not forget your special memories, but if you are concerned, take a picture of the item, so you can look at it at anytime, but throw the physical piece away.
  • Your old shoes. Time to let go of the shoes you’ve had for a decade that either have sentimental value or you’re waiting to come back into vogue. Get rid of the old to make room for the new. It’s amazing what a face lift it will give to your closet.
