Tulsa Winter Fleet Working to Keep Roadways Safe
Snow and rain create dangerous road conditions, especially in the winter when low temperatures cause precipitation to freeze and become slippery. Car accidents increase when roadways are slick, and in order to minimize that, the City of Tulsa is working on ways to maximize treating roads for safe travel.
This week, the city deployed its winter weather fleet to work on road monitoring and conditioning. Rainfall and snow on the roads have made it hard for motorists to drive around the city, but utility crews have been working continuously to clear snow and salt the roads.
City crews have been working early in the mornings until 8:00 at night to condition all the roadways in Tulsa. According to Tim McCorkell, Tulsa Street Maintenance Manager, there is a lot of sleet and slush build up that the utility crews need to plow.
Right now, the City has over 46 plows to clear roads in winter weather conditions. Then, once roads are cleared and rain ceases, salting begins. The City of Tulsa has 64 salt trucks with more than 10,000 tons of salt to use.
City utility crews are asking drivers to give the trucks space to work on their plowing and salting. Trucks will continually work until all the roads in Tulsa are clear and in good driving condition.
