Things You Need to Know Before Hiring Someone to Work on Your Home

Whether it’s for a major renovation or a specific repair, when you hire someone to work on your home, there are some things you should keep in mind. hiring is crucial to keep your projects safe and successful. There are a lot of trustworthy handymen out there, but there are also some that are either unqualified or dishonest.  So, you want to do your due diligence to ensure your projects are safe and successful.

Below are some crucial items you need to take into consideration before hiring someone to work on your home:

  • Interview prospects. Before making your final decision, interview a few prospects first and ask them questions to get an idea of who you they are. Ask them the tenure of their business and their past experience. Ask them about themselves and determine if they are someone you feel is trustworthy.
  • Request permits. Proper permits are required for a professional to work for you. Make sure that they can show you permit to verify their legality.  If they can’t, move on.
  • Ask for a project proposal. Let them present their own proposal for your project, including the cost. Make sure to confirm of the finality of the cost in advance so that you are not faced with hidden costs during the project. This will help you know if their services will match your budget or not.
  • Put it on paper. Insist that all agreements and invoices be put on paper.  If an issue arises later or you have to file an insurance claim, having evidence in writing is crucial.
  • Never hire over the phone. You need to see your prospects personally so you can get a sense for them. Over the phone transactions carry a higher risk.
  • Ask if they offer a warranty. There is no guarantee of a successful project, especially if you are working with a new person. A warranty gives you the assurance that, no matter what, you will get what you have talked about.

Do your research. Ask around for average labor costs and costs of materials. That way, when you interview prospects, you know if they are being reasonable or going overboard.
