Tulsa Public Schools Offers Incentives to Retiring Teachers
After years of teaching and sharing knowledge with students, when a teacher retires, they leave an opening for a new teacher to fill their place. This can be a great opportunity for new teachers, but it also creates a lack of teachers for that subject for the upcoming school year until a new person is hired.
Though recruitment is an ongoing activity in Tulsa Public Schools, the system is still sometimes left with a very short time period to find the right candidate for the position. Sometimes this leads to having to settle for a less competitive candidate or risk having no teacher at all.
Tulsa Public Schools is addressing this issue by offering an incentive program that will make their recruitment more successful. The incentive program is offered to retiring teachers and allows them to give early notice of their retirement, so Tulsa Public Schools knows to being looking for a replacement.
The incentive program works by giving eligible retiring teachers an incentive of $1,000. The goal of the program is to create more time for the school to look for more competitive candidates and maintain and grow the level of teaching talent in schools.
The school board agreed unanimously to bring back the program from last year. The program received a positive result from last year with 72 employees receiving the incentives.
