What to Do When Your Plumbing Floods

What to Do When Your Plumbing Floods

Flooding is one of the most destructive disasters that your home can face. House flooding can happen from either the outside or from the inside, which is why it is important to take measures to protect your house, such as sealing cracks in your walls and foundation and making sure your pipes are in good shape.

Nonetheless, if you find yourself facing a flooding issue at home, here are the things to do:

  • Find the cause of the flooding. This is crucial to being able to stop more water from flooding in your home. Is the source your water heater or \ your pipes? Once you find the cause, shut the water source off to it immediately. If you can’t find the cause, turn off the water source to your entire house.
  • Call a plumber. Flooding problems are difficult to deal with and, therefore, best left to the professionals. Call your plumber first so he can immediately come to your house and fix the problem.
  • Keep your family safe. Secure your kids and pets and keep them safe upstairs or remove them from the house entirely.
  • Turn off the main power source to your home. Water and electricity should never mix, and if they do, it becomes an immediate hazard for electrocution. Shut down the power in the areas of the house that are flooded.
  • Salvage what you can. Try to remove as many possessions and furniture from the flooded area as you can, so they don’t become severely damaged. Water damage can be difficult to reverse, so the faster you can remove things, the better.
  • Try to remove the water. Get a bucket and take out as much water outside as you can.
  • Document everything for insurance claims. You will need to secure evidence of the flood and damage so you can submit it with your insurance claims. Photo evidence is best. Document the scene before you change anything or begin removing your possessions.
