New Project Turns Gilcrease Expressway into a Turnpike
A new plan for development has been announced by Governor Mary Fallin involving the Gilcrease Expressway. She has announced that the state of Oklahoma will be turning the Gilcrease Expressway into a turnpike, crossing over the Arkansas River.
The plan is to expand Oklahoma’s turnpike system by finishing the expressway on the northwest side of Tulsa. Once completed, the turnpike will cross over the Arkansas River, connecting to I-44 and Highway 412.
The Gilcrease Expressway cuts through some of the largest hills in Tulsa, allowing drivers to get all the way from the airport to 41st street. But, city leaders want it to extend further, all the way across the Arkansas River, so it can connect to I-44.
The goal is to provide better routes for trucks and a connection to the Port of Catoosa. Once trucks start taking the new route, there will be no more heavy load equipment passing through the downtown area.
In order to support the project, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority has granted 28 million dollars for the construction of the new turnpike. The budget will be used to fund the section from Edison to 21st Street, as well as the bridge crossing the Arkansas River.
