Taking Care of Your Houseplants During Winter

Now that the weather is starting to get cooler, it’s time to start thinking about preparing your plants for winter. Houseplants are relatively easy to maintain during winter because they don’t require a lot of light or water. Plus, bringing them inside will add a touch of freshness to your home even during the cold winter months.

Below are some helpful tips for taking care of your houseplants during winter:

  • Water less often. Your plants do not need to drown in water this time of year. In fact, you need to let the soil dry to the roots before you water them. Remember to keep an eye on your plants because, though you don’t want to overwater them, you don’t want them to become dehydrated to the point that their leaves dry up and fall off.
  • Give them sun. Find a bright area of your house and place your plants there. Even in winter, your plants still need sun.
  • Increase humidity around them. Your plants need to be in a humid place. This can be a challenge because heaters dry out the air. So, if you have a humidifier at home, turn it on near them on a regular basis to keep them from drying out. If you don’t have a humidifier, place them in areas with more moisture if possible, such as your bathroom or kitchen.
  • Clean them. Pay attention to any dead leaves that emerge and remove them. Dead leaves take water away from the live leaves unnecessarily. Dust your plants as well to keep them looking healthy and pretty.
  • Check the surrounding temperature. Do not let your plants get exposed to highly fluctuating temperatures. The stark contrast can damage them. Keep them away from doors.
  • Do not fertilize them. Your plants naturally go into dormant mode during the winter, so it is not a good idea to confuse them by giving them fertilizer that encourages them to grow. Wait until spring.
