Tulsa Chosen to Participate in National Open Data Initiative
Tulsa is one of eight cities in the U.S. that has been chosen to participate in a new Bloomberg Philanthropies initiative called the What Works Cities Initiative. Access to government data and services is crucial for creating a strong quality of life in a city and providing convenience and transparency in local government. Residents of a city or a community should be given access to open data, so they can be informed about ongoing projects and discussions, and that is exactly what this new initiative aims to achieve.
The City of Tulsa has been working on providing open data to its residents for several years. It has been working with Code for Tulsa in creating a city data repository for the public, so people can have greater access to government services and become more involved in the city.
Because of this, Tulsa has been granted the chance to boost their efforts through a national initiative that will expand the use and access of public data. The idea behind the What Works Cities Initiative is to help different cities in the country boost their public access systems so that more people can benefit, both within their respective cities as well as across the board by learning from what other cities are doing.
Tulsa will also be provided with various support services from national groups to help with things like decision-making and budgeting. Over 100 cities applied for the program, and Tulsa is among the first 8 cities to be selected, alongside Seattle, WA, New Orleans, LA, Louisville, KY, Chattanooga, TN, Kansas City, MO, Jackson, MS, and Mesa, Arizona.
