Tulsa Health Department Encourages Parents to Have Kids Immunized Before School Starts

Certain diseases can be prevented through proper immunization. Children are required to complete their necessary immunizations prior to going to school, so both they and their classmates can be protected against potential preventable diseases.

In Tulsa, children’s immunization are offered in advance of school starting in order to cut down on last-minute rushes during the last few days of summer. The Tulsa Health Department wants to be sure all kids receive their necessary immunizations, so they have already begun encouraging parents to take their kids to the doctor to be immunized. It is especially important for children entering kindergarten through the 7th grade because their young immune systems are the most vulnerable.

Certain immunizations are required by schools, while others are additional recommendations by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). This year, there are no new requirements and immunization centers will be following the same list as last year.

Children who are entering kindergarten must receive their fifth dose of DtaP, fourth dose of polio vaccine, and second dose of MMR. Children who are transferring from other states will need to take the hepatitis A vaccine. Four-year-olds will need to have their second dose of varicella.

Students in the 7th grade will need to take Tdap booster. If there are students in the 8th  through 11th grades that have not yet had their Tdap booster, they will need to take it. First-time college students who will be residing on campus campus should take the meningitis vaccine.

Centers that offer immunizations include the Bixby Health Center, Central Regional Health Center, Collinsville Health Center, James O. Goodwin Health Center, North Regional Health and Wellness Center, and the Sand Springs Health Center.
