How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint at Home

How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint at Home

Our daily habits, no matter how simple, can significantly affect the world we live in. Simple activities we do each day contribute to the release of carbon dioxide into the air, which impacts the environment either positively or negatively. This is what we call our carbon footprint. If you are not careful and do not understand the effects of what you do, you could be contributing to the issue of climate change.

Below are some easy tips for how you can reduce your carbon footprint at home:

  • Unplug electrical devices that are not in use. If you are not using your toaster for a while, for example, unplug it. This will help you reduce energy consumption and save on your bills.
  • Grow your own food. Most food has to travel a long distance from its source to your grocery store and home. Help reduce fuel consumption and the carbon footprint of this process by growing your own vegetable in your backyard instead. You can choose the vegetables that you eat most frequently and save money by not having to buy groceries as a marked-up price.
  • Look for appliances with the Energy Star logo. This means they qualify as an appliance that uses a significantly lower amount of energy to do tasks and that has a notably reduced carbon footprint than other, non-energy efficient models.
  • Insulate your home. This will help minimize the amount of work your heater and air conditioner must to do keep your home warm and cool. Less work equals less energy consumption. It also helps to maintain the overall condition of your heating and air conditioning units, so they don’t overdo themselves and require unnecessary repairs.
  • Use LED bulbs. Change your incandescent bulbs to energy-saving ones such as LED or CFLs. They use less energy, which will help lower your energy bill and also help you avoid the pain of having to change light bulbs as regularly.
  • Recycle what you can. Help Mother Nature retain her natural resources and reduce landfill waste by recycling what you can.  This act can create a huge positive impact on the environment.
  • Buy only what you need. We often want to treat ourselves or have grandiose ideas about meals we want to make. We buy things that we don’t normally need or something that goes beyond what we need. Think small and save more by buying only what you need to live at home. A smaller refrigerator can help because it reduces the amount of space you have to store things, thus causing you to shop more conservatively.
