Saving on Your Air Conditioning Bill This Summer
The summer season may offer a lot of fun under the sun, but when it gets too hot outside, you want to be able to take refuge from the heat inside in a nice air conditioned house. Turning on the AC makes everything feel cooler and better, but it also brings a higher energy bill.
Fortunately, there are ways you can save money on your air conditioning bills this summer without having to sacrifice enjoying the cool air. Here are a few tips:
- Be sure you install your air conditioning unit properly. Improper installation can cause it to be less efficient and waste energy. Unless you have experience with heat and air work, it’s best to have an expert do it for you.
- Install a programmable thermostat. This will enable you to adjust your thermostat to your desired coolness at various points of the day. For example, you can raise the temperature when you’re not at home or you’re sleeping, so it doesn’t run as regularly unnecessarily.
- Clean filters and coils. One of the most common problems people encounter with the air conditioners is blocked airflow. It’s important to keep your outer and inner coils clean, as well as the filters. Otherwise, your AC will have to work harder to cool the house because not all of the air it’s producing reaches your rooms, and that wastes energy.
- Choose the right sized air conditioning unit. Yes, size does matter. If your unit is too small, it will have to work too hard and still may not be able to cool properly. Bigger units cools things down faster, which means they can turn off more frequently to save energy.
- Utilize drapes. Install thick window treatments, so cool air cannot easily escape.
- Do not place any heat-generating appliances near your thermostat. This will skew the temperature reading your thermostat detects for the overall house, causing it to run more than necessary.
- Use fans. If you need to cool a bigger room, but your air conditioning isn’t doing the trick, turn on fans to help spread the cool air around faster, so the air conditioner doesn’t have to run as long.
- If you must buy a new one, buy an energy-efficient air conditioning unit.
