Tips on How to Combat Bed Bugs

As cute as the nighttime phrase, “Don’t let the bed bugs bite,” is, the reality is that bed bugs are no laughing matter! Bed bugs are a huge pain to have in your bed because not only do they bite you, but they can be difficult to get rid of.

A few facts about bed bugs:

  • They are tiny brown insects that infest and live in your sheets and mattress.
  • They feast on your blood and even on your pets’ blood.
  • They can attach to your clothes and furniture and even be transported into your home from outside sources by attaching themselves to you or your belongings.

Fortunately, there are ways to combat these pests. Here are a few examples:

  • Check your bed thoroughly. They tend to hide, so you need examine your bed carefully. Look in the seams of your mattress, between the cushions, under the dust cover, and under your bed.
  • Keep your house clean. A dirty house will attract pests, so the easiest way to reduce that risk is to keep your house clean. Vacuum regularly to remove any potential bed bugs that have taken up residence. Sweep and mop the floors with mild soap and water on a regular basis as well.
  • Wash your linens regularly. Just like your floors, make sure that your linens are clean too. Bed bugs tend to reside in dirty linens, as the dust and dirt are attractive to them.
  • Check any new furniture before you bring it into your home, especially second-hand furniture. They can be sources of bed bugs, and the last thing you want to do is introduce them to the rest of your house.
  • Use a reliable pesticide. Bedbugs can usually only be permanently eliminated by using an effective pesticide to kill them. Simply changing beds may or may not be effective if they have also infested your carpets and rugs.
  • Stave them. Beds that are infested with bed bugs must be sealed with clear plastic so they cannot escape. If they become trapped without anyone to feed on, they will eventually starve to death.
  • Ask a professional exterminator to come to your house to eliminate them. They have powerful pesticides and know what steps to take in order to do an effective job.
