Taking Good Care of Your Houseplants

Bringing nature into your home creates a more relaxing and soothing ambiance. One way of incorporating a natural touch to your home is by adding houseplants in various places. Houseplants add beauty, healthier air, and an irreplaceable live energy. However, if you don’t care for them properly, they can end up having the opposite effect if they start to wither and die.

Here are a few tips for keeping your houseplants healthy and long-lasting:

  • Keep them in a spot with sufficient sunlight. Plants need sun to keep them alive, but different types require different amounts, also consider their light requirements. Do they need direct sunlight for several hours a day, or do they live better where they only receive indirect sunlight? When you buy a plant, check their light requirements.
  • Water them. Aside from sunlight, the other most important thing your plants need is water. You must keep them fully moisturized, so  they won’t become weak and wilted. Just like with sunlight, however, different plants have different water requirements. You can kill a plant that requires a lot of water if you don’t water it enough, but conversely you can also essentially “drown” plants with two much water if they don’t require that much.
  • Clean them. Keep their pots free from residue like dead leaves and weeds. These things will prevent them from growing further and can also steal nutrients away from them.
  • Keep pests off. Some bugs will eat plants, so check them occasionally to be sure there are no pests attacking them. If you see bugs, knock them off by spraying them with water or an anti-insect spray. Just make sure that what you use is safe for your plants.
  • Change your pot if needed. The pot is like a home to your plant. If it is broken or has holes in it, it’s time to repot. Also add fresh soil to your new pot every now and then to refresh its nutrients.
  • Prune them when necessary. You don’t want your plants to outgrow your room. Likewise, trimming them from time to time actually keeps them healthier.
  • Keep them away from drafts. Most houseplants do not like being near draft, so keep your houseplants away from vents, doors, and windows that have leaks.
