Tulsa Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr Day with Parade
This upcoming Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and if you have the day off work and are looking for a way to celebrate, head downtown for the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of the greatest leaders of the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He worked tirelessly to advance African-American civil rights and advocated nonviolent, civil disobedience. His speech on the Washington Mall in March 1963, “I Have a Dream,” continues to be a powerful message to this day.
The parade will begin at Detroit & John Hope Franklin Blvd at 11:00am, wind around through the Greenwood District, and end in front of ONEOK Field in the Brady Arts District. There will be lots of colorful floats, displays, and music, and many organizations will be participating, including the City of Tulsa, Teach For America, Samson, PepsiCo, One Gas, Tulsa Drillers, and US Cellular.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade is organized by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Society of Tulsa, which was founded in 1979 and hosts various events throughout the year.
