Tulsa Ballet Presents “The Nutcracker”

Tulsa Ballet Presents “The Nutcracker”

The beloved Christmas tradition, “The Nutcracker”, is now showing at the Tulsa Ballet, and Tulsans still have one more week to see it.  The show opened last Friday, and performances will resume at 2pm and 7pm on December 19-21 at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center downtown at 101 E. Third Street.

“The Nutcracker” is a story about a young girl’s fantasy that unfolds into a remarkable production that mixes the skill of a world class ballet company, the visuals of a Broadway show, and the heart-warming story of a fairy-tale Christmas. The ballet was originally created by Marius Petipa in 1892 and is set to the wonderful music of classical composer, Tchaikovsky. It wasn’t until 1954, when George Balanchine created his version of the ballet for the New York City Ballet, however, that “The Nutcracker” became an American phenomenon.

Tulsa Ballet has been performing “The Nutcracker” since 1956, and it seeing it has become a holiday tradition for many families. More than 100 children join the Tulsa Ballet to perform as mice, toy soldiers, and the beloved little clowns that emerge from Mother Ginger’s massive dress.

Retired principal dancers Alexandra Bergman, Ma Cong, and Alfonso Martín return to the stage for this special production. Martín and Cong will alternate in the role of Drosselmeyer, while Bergman will take over the role of the Head Maid, who is the object of the affections of the family’s elderly Butler, played by Dan McGeehan. The Tulsa actor, artist, director, and writer, has performed many character roles with the company over the years.

“Dan is so funny,” Bergman said. “He pretty much steals the show without even trying. I think I’m more of his sidekick, who’s there to really let him shine.”

Attend “The Nutracker” this weekend for its final performances before Christmas. Tickets start at $20 and go up to $99 for a VIP Experience, which includes tickets in prime orchestra-level seating, the chance to go on-stage after the performance to meet the dancers, and a keepsake Nutcracker signed by the cast.
