Making the Most of the Space in Your Small Kitchen
Do you have a small sized kitchen? It may be initially frustrating to figure out how to maximize its functionality, but the truth is, there are many ways you can make it both practical and attractive. Here are a few ways to make the most out of a small kitchen space:
- When building cabinets, focus on vertical space rather than horizontal space. This is a good technique for opening up floor space. Take your cabinets all the way to the ceiling to provide extra shelving without making the area feel claustrophobic. If some items are too high to reach, that can easily be solved by using a step stool.. Make sure that there is an available stool in the kitchen for this purpose. It is highly recommended to use open shelves than closed ones, as it gives a more airy and open feel.
- For larger appliances, such as your refrigerator, dishwasher, stove, etc., create built in spaces, so they fit into the cabinetry design. This creates a more modern feel and is also space-saving.
- Tables with foldable leaves are a smart idea for smaller kitchens because they can be expanded to accommodate your entire family at meal time, but can then be shortened during normal circumstances, so they take up less space. Having backless stools is another great option for tables and overhanging counter space, as they add a cute seating addition without taking up a lot of space.
- Reduce or eliminate underutilized spaces in your kitchen, such as corners. Arrange storage tins for sugar, flour, and coffee in countertop corners to maximize those spaces in a visually appealing way. Consider utilizing a lazy Susan to further maximize storage.
- Hang pots and pans on a wire rack attached to the ceiling versus taking up storage space by storing them in cabinets. You can also hang them on a wall rack if a ceiling fixture is unpractical.
- Always remember that proper lighting is important because you need to be able to see when preparing food. Nice lighting also opens a space up visually and makes it look fresher and larger.
- Only keep the appliances and utensils that you really need. This will prevent clutter from overtaking your limited space.
- Color can make a huge impact, so opt for cheerful colors, such as yellow and orange, when decorating your kitchen.
