Summer Stage Lives On with New Tulsa Fringe Fest
Despite facing suggested cuts in the city budget, the Tulsa Performing Arts Center (PAC) is still pushing through with the organization’s most popular annual event, Summer Stage Tulsa. The performance series takes place in the PAC’s lower three theater spaces and is scheduled from June 13 to July 20. This year, Tulsa PAC will also introduce a new feature called Tulsa Fringe, which is a spin off of the Summer Stage series and will be taking place at four venues located off the Tulsa PAC premises.
The popularity of fringe shows around the world started in 1947 when performers began doing shows of a spontaneous nature on the outskirts of the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland. The PAC’s Trust program director, Shirley Elliott, recently explained that the organization has been working for the past decade toward the materialization of the Tulsa Fringe. The PAC’s goal has been to add more variety to the series and to be able to work with more organizations to make Summer Stage truly a city festival and not just the organization’s own.
For its first showcase, the Tulsa Fringe will feature four acts. The Blue Whale Comedy Festival is a national collection of comedians who will perform at different locations around the city, including the Comedy Parlor and Guthrie Green on June 13-15. “Real Woman Have Curves” presented by the Tulsa Latino Theatre Company will be shown at Living Arts of Tulsa on June 27-28. “Still Slouching: From Brooklyn to Busy head” will feature comedy and stories by local writers Barry Friedman and John Wooley at the Woody Guthrie Center on June 27-28. And, A Busker Night by a collection of street performers, including Tulsa’s very own Starlight Concert Band, will take place at Guthrie Green on July 11. Guests will also be treated to more shows inside the PAC, which will embody the Fringe ideal of a mix of fun and different types of entertainment that everyone will enjoy.
