Applying Reduce, Reuse and Recycle for Greener Living at Home

The 3R’s mantra has been very popular for many years. It stands for Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle and is emphasized in schools to teach children about greener living. As a parent, you need to apply the mantra at home as well, so our younger generations can grow up living a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

One way to start living a greener lifestyle is by reducing landfill waste and having a compost pile at home. Having a compost pile entails composting your daily kitchen and food waste by turning it into soil. You not only help the environment by reducing landfill waste, but you also end up producing nutrient-rich soil that can be used in your gardens. In addition to fruits and vegetables, there are so many other items that can be composted as well, including coffee grounds and filters, egg shells, fruit and vegetable scraps, tea bags, garden waste, leaves, chicken manure, and compostable kitty litter.

There are many opportunities to reuse items instead of throwing them away. Repurposing cardboard boxes is a perfect example. You can use them for mailing things, which saves you money by not having to buy a new one, or for art projects. Plastic bottles can be cut into unique vases for flowers. There are many ways to reuse items at home, so you just have to be creative and resourceful enough to transform them and give them new life.

Recycling is one of the easiest and most helpful ways you can live a greener life. You can collect aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic materials, and paper products and take them to a recycling center or deposit them in recycling receptacles. Be sure you put them in bins that are specifically labeled for recycling.  It can be helpful to collect recyclable materials by having a small recycling bin in your kitchen, where most of the trash is produced. Before depositing items into the recycling bin, make sure they are rinsed properly so they don’t attract bugs.

By reducing the amount of waste you produce at home, you reduce the amount of landfill space that is so destructive to our earth. The 3R’s helps lower the amount of pollution buried in the ground or released into the air, which creates a healthier, safer environment for us all.
