Easy Lawn Care for Home Owners
A well-kept lawn can improve your curb appeal and increase the value of your property. Taking care of and maintaining a lawn, however, can be a daunting task. Fortunately, there are some easy ways to help keep your lawn healthy:
- Check for soil compaction. This often occurs in areas that are frequently subjected to heavy traffic. When the soil is compacted, it can lead to problems in irrigation, water absorption, air circulation, and nutrient absorption. To test whether the soil is compacted, stick a garden fork in the ground. If it fails to easily penetrate the soil two inches deep, then your ground is indeed compacted. The best remedy for compacted soil is aeration, which can be done by punching holes in the soil. The holes should be at least 4 inches deep, enough to facilitate air circulation and absorption of nutrients and water throughout the soil. You may use an aerating machine or a manual aerating tool that can be found in hardware stores.
- Ensure that your lawn’s soil is healthy. Fertilizers can be used to facilitate grass growth, but they should not be overused. The timing of fertilizing is also important. Chemical fertilizers should be used only lightly during the spring and heavier in the fall. Remember, fertilize only when necessary. Another indicator of soil health is its acidity. The growth of moss can often indicate acidity in the soil. Acidic soil can be treated by applying lime to balance the pH level of the soil.
- Mow regularly. This is the most basic and obvious task in lawn care. Keeping your grass at a certain height will give it a healthy manicured look and help it stay healthier. Be sure that your mower has a sharp blade before running it over your lawn in order to prevent tearing in the strands or ends of the grass.
- Water your lawn properly. The way to properly water a lawn is to water it deeply and less frequently. This helps the grass roots grow deeper into the ground and produces a rich, lively shade of green.
